No MRI Facilities at Letterkenny University Hospital during Weekends ‘Extremely Concerning’ – Doherty

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Deputy Pearse Doherty has today (Tuesday) said that the unavailability of MRI scanning facilities at Letterkenny University Hospital during the weekend period is ‘extremely concerning’ and is calling on the Minister for Health to take action to ensure that Radiographers remain on call on Saturdays and Sundays.

Deputy Doherty’s comments come following the disclosure of figures requested from the HSE detailing both staffing rotas and access hours for radiology services at the Hospital. The data reveals that no MRI service is in place for patients at Letterkenny from 5pm on Fridays and right throughout the weekend.

Deputy Doherty said:

“Following having received complaints from a number of constituents about them having been unable to access radiology facilities at Letterkenny hospital over weekends, I brought the matter to the attention of the Minister and I requested a detailed breakdown of staffing arrangements and hours of access to Xray, CT Ultrasound and MRI services at the hospital.

With proper support Inishowen could compete to be most popular destination in Ireland - Murray

Local Sinn Féin councillor Jack Murray has said that Inishowen has all the qualities to make it the premier tourism destination in Ireland but a lack of political will has hindered its chances to date.

Cllr Murray said;

“Inishowen is one of the most beautiful and scenic areas on the island. We have beaches which could rival any in Europe, top class hotels and restaurants, ancient sites like Grianan of Aileach, Ireland’s most northerly point at Malin Head and Tidy Towns Gold Medal winners in Buncrana.

“We are also among the most inexpensive places to visit in Ireland, yet we receive a fraction of the more than one million visitors which Co. Kerry sees annually.

“In my view, Kerry’s only advantage is its accessibility and the reduced journey time from Dublin. Inishowen and Donegal as a whole has been failed over decades in that regard. We are the only county in the state without access to rail, while the northwest is the only region on the island without dual carriageway connection to Dublin.

Doherty Welcomes Restoration of Hydrotherapy Pool at Our Lady’s Hospital

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Deputy Pearse Doherty has today (Wednesday) welcomed confirmation from the HSE that hydrotherapy pool facilities have been reinstated at Our Lady’s Hospital in Manorhamilton.

In a reply to a Parliamentary Question tabled by Deputy Doherty the HSE has clarified that the hydro pool, which had to cease patient referrals from Donegal and elsewhere a number of weeks ago due to on-going mechanical issues, is now fully operational following an extensive upgrade.

Welcoming the news, Deputy Doherty said:

“In September, I was contacted by a number of constituents who brought it to my attention that they had scheduled appointments cancelled for the hydrotherapy pool suite at Manorhamilton and staff advised them that the cancellations were as a result of re-occurring mechanical problems with the pool.

Irish Diaspora Deserve More than Just Lip Service

Sinn Fein Finance Spokesperson Deputy Pearse Doherty has this week called on the Government to immediately start work on an action plan aimed at resolving the plight of undocumented Irish citizens living in the United States, and has urged the Government to prioritise the case of Irish migrants at all future talks with the incoming U.S. President during their term in office.

Deputy Doherty, who will this week seek assurances from Government that the diaspora will be central to all future engagements between cabinet and officials In the U.S., says that the failure by successive Governments to do much other than pay lip service to Irish citizens living illegally in the United State must now stop.

Deputy Doherty said:

“As many people will know, I have repeatedly been raising the plight of undocumented Irish citizens living in the United States ever since I first entered the Dáil as a Public Representative.

“Since then, we’ve seen successive Governments come and go and yet the real situation facing Irish citizens in the U.S. has not improved, and many of the undocumented continue to live in a state of constant fear and isolation, something which I feel is due to the inaction of Ministers and Taoisigh both past and present.

“We all know of loved ones who have taken the decision to travel to the United States in order to carve out a better life for both themselves and their families, and yet countless numbers of Irish migrants will face hardship as they try to contend with living as an undocumented person abroad.

“It is sad and horrible to think that Irish citizens, after having moved to the U.S. that, because of their illegal status, they cannot return home to see loved ones or to be part of those big life events such as weddings, the birth of a relative or even for to come home to be with their families following the death of a loved one.

“It’s also important to remember all those Irish citizens who’ve been deported back to Ireland from the U.S. and forced to give up their lives in America simply because Governments here have failed in their duty to represent them and lobby on their behalf as part of official engagements with authorities in the U.S.
