Council should seek cross-party meeting with Minister Shane Ross over City of Derry Airport - Murray

Inishowen Sinn Féin councillor Jack Murray has expressed his disappointment after receiving a letter from Minister Shane Ross which stated that he would not provide any funding for City of Derry Airport. The letter was in response to a motion calling for government support for the airport which was moved by Cllr Murray and received unanimous backing from Donegal County Council.

Cllr Murray said;

"I am extremely disappointed at Minister Ross's complete refusal to consider financial support for City of Derry Airport. The Minister does not seem to recognise how important the airport is to the people of Donegal.

"The northwest of Ireland is the only region on the island without dual carriageway connection to Dublin. Donegal is the only county in the state without access to rail. This only compounds the importance and necessity of air access.

"40% of passengers who use City of Derry Airport are from County Donegal. This was recognised in the past when the Irish government funded a PSO service from 2001 to 2011.

European Commission Moves Closer to Prosecuting State over Gaoth Dobhair Sewerage Scheme Failure

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Deputy Pearse Doherty has today (Thursday) welcomed confirmation that the European Commission has escalated formal infringement proceedings against the State over its failure to deliver the long delayed Gaoth Dobhair Sewerage Scheme.

The Commission’s decision to progress the case was confirmed in a reply to a Parliamentary Question tabled by Deputy Doherty this week, in which the Government confirmed that it has received a ‘reasoned opinion’ from the Commission outlining that the State is in violation of Community Law over its failing to fulfil its obligation to provide a waste water collection network for Gaoth Dobhair.

The action comes following the submission of a report by both Deputy Doherty and Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy to the European Commission back in May 2015 arguing that the non-delivery of the scheme contravened EU legislation.

Commenting on the news, Deputy Doherty said:

“In May last year, both MEP Matt Carthy and I compiled a detailed report for the European Commission in which we argued that the failure by successive Governments here to construct a dedicated sewerage scheme for Gaoth Dobhair was in direct violation of the EU’s Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive.

“Following our submission, the Commissioner Mr Karmenu Vella replied to our report to state that the Commission would include the Goath Dobhair scheme to the other outstanding infringement cases against Ireland as he agreed that the situation violated Community Law.

“In December last year, the State received an informal notice from the Commission for non-compliance in respect of the failure to progress a waste water collection network in Goath Dobhair.

Doherty Welcomes Commencement of Convoy Sewerage Scheme Works

Sinn Féin Councillor Liam Doherty has today (Wednesday) welcomed the commencement of works as part of the long awaited Convoy Sewerage Scheme, and has urged both the local authority and Irish Water to ensure the prompt delivery of remedial drainage and sewerage works at local housing estates which it’s planned will now be taken over by the authorities.

Cllr Doherty’s comments come after project contractors began the initial site and preparatory work for the scheme last week.

Cllr Doherty said:

“As everyone is well aware, I have been in constant communication with both the local authority and Irish Water on behalf of local residents in relation to the town’s sewerage scheme which was signed off on in January following the awarding of contracts for the project.

“I am delighted to now have had it confirmed that the contractors have now begun to carry out these works for a new water treatment system in the town however, it is now vital that local housing estates also see their supplemental projects advance to construction stage soon.

Murray calls for upgrade of South Inishowen water supply line as extent of water outages is revealed

Local Sinn Féin councillor Jack Murray has called for a complete upgrade of the water supply line from the Eddie Fullerton Dam to South Inishowen.

Cllr Murray made the remarks after he and Senator Pádraig Mac Lochlainn received correspondence from Irish Water which outlined the full extent of water outages this year.

Cllr Murray said;

“There were four significant water outages in South Inishowen this year. These outages ranged from 663 properties being without water for 26 hours in January to 2092 properties being without water for 2 hours in August.

“That is a huge amount of people who are without a water on an all too regular basis.

“It is clear to me that the pipe from the Eddie Fullerton Dam which supplies Fahan, Burt, Bridgend, Burnfoot, Muff and Newtowncunningham is not fit for purpose. Its upgrade needs to be prioritised by Irish Water.

“Senator Pádraig Mac Lochlainn and I have been in regular contact with Irish Water on this issue pushing for the upgrade to take place.
