Huge Crowds attend Liadh Ní Riada’s Presidential Campaign Launch Night in Donegal

There was a huge crowd in attendance at last Saturday night’s (6th October) official Donegal launch of Áras hopeful Liadh Ní Riada’s Presidential campaign.

The event, which took place in Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair, was attended by a number of notable figures who spoke about their reasons for publicly endorsing the Sinn Féin MEP’s bid for the Presidency. They included famous Donegal actor Hughie ‘Beag’ Devenney as well as Altan vocalist, Mairéad Ní Mhaonigh, who also performed live music on the night.

Speaking following the launch, Sinn Féin TD and Director of Elections for the campaign, Deputy Pearse Doherty said:

“I am truly privileged to have been selected by Sinn Féin as Director of Elections for Liadh’s campaign to contest the upcoming Presidential election.

“Saturday’s launch was a phenomenal success with huge crowds of people from right across Donegal having come out to show their support for Liadh’s campaign and to wish her well in her bid for the Presidency.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank them for this support and for helping to make the launch night such a special and uplifting occasion.

“I especially want to say a huge ‘Go Raibh Maith Agaibh’ to local actor Hughie ‘Beag’ Devenney and to Altan’s Mairéad Ní Mhaonigh for their fantastic speeches and for entertaining the crowds gathered here at the Amharclann for the launch.

“Liadh is without doubt a truly remarkable person and she has been heartened by the huge welcome and show of support she has received from those right across the northwest.

“Liadh is a passionate Gaeilgeoir and is in fact the first person from the Gaeltacht to contest a presidential race, and so the fact that the local launch of her campaign is being held right here in the heart of the Donegal Gaeltacht is very fitting indeed.

“In her role as an MEP, she has actively campaigned and advocated on behalf of the Irish people in Europe since she was elected to the European parliament back in 2014, and I’ve no doubt that she will bring that very same drive, passion and dedication to the office of President.

"As President, Liadh has stated that she wants to use the office to initiate an inclusive citizens' conversation on a future united Ireland, one in which no one is left behind or forgotten.

“This is reflected in the theme of Liadh’s campaign which is ‘A New President for a New Ireland’, and underscores the pressing need which exists for a new vision to overcome the social and economic inequalities being faced by some many in what are these uncertain times.

“Liadh has all the necessary skills and experience required for the office of President, and she has the ability to bring the people of or island together and to set about creating a vision of a more fair and inclusive Ireland for all.

“With the support of the people behind her and behind this campaign, I have little doubt that Liadh will go on to proudly and passionately serve the people as the next President of Ireland.”
